The Red Tent is a safe sacred space created by women for the empowerment of all women. Women gather here to share their stories, nurture their souls, promote deep conversations and create learning experiences for women. The deep rich red textiles of the Red Tent recall both historical & biblical Red Tents that served women following pregnancy & throughout menstruation, but contemporary Red Tents such as this one are far more inclusive. The red fabric often evokes feelings of safety and nurturance; it has been compared to a womb experience.

Check out the Red Tent Events by stopping by and signing up on their list. It's ongoing! :)

FOREVER YOUNG

Overcoming Obstacles and Embracing What Is Possible

We have all heard the expression, “You’re only as old as you look and feel”. Science can’t explain all the benefits that are gained from a regular hatha yoga practice, but anyone who practices yoga on a regular basis knows the power of  hatha yoga to make you feel better, look better and live better.

Today 1 in 3 Americans is over 50. Cheryl Alexander, herself a 50+ year old woman examines how Hatha Yoga can make their lives healthier and happier. She will share her own perspective and present some of the scientific evidence as well as interview some of her students who have found hatha yoga to be the fountain of youth.

At The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, we engage in research in these practices and offer them in our clinic to patients and caregivers, as well as to faculty and staff. Furthermore, through the Friends of Integrative Medicine, we share our research findings and practices to the broader community to educate in the areas of prevention, treatment and survivorship. Women in Hindu Shakta tantra hold a rather contentious position, of being primary objects of worship, yet their bodily functions are seen as polluting and problematic. Many women tantric adepts occupy a liminal space between the male adept and society. This paper aims to explain kuṇḍalinī yoga as practiced by women.

Fall in love with Back Bending
Limited Capacity seats available
You need this ticket from Eventbrite to sign up: Early Bird 2015 Full Weekend Pass. Full Texas Yoga Conference Weekend Pass (Fri-Sun) Friday Intensives

This Session is based on beginners to advanced level back bend practice.

Back bends often evokes strong emotions such as fear of unknown, not measuring up to the task or simply getting overwhelmed and stunned by the challenge at hand.

Backbends are considered the core of the physical yoga practice. It is about awakening the energy and channelling it up the spine to cleanse the nervous system. Back bends thrust full life force up through this central channel and help remove blockages along the way.

It doesn’t matter whether your spine is flexible or stiff.  If you are not familiar with the strength, stamina and flexibility needed for back bending you are sure to have doubts.

In this session we have incorporated following elements which are crucial to enjoyable and safe back bend practices:

 Proper breathing techniques

 Right anatomical awareness

 Contraindications according to different conditions

Specific variations according to bodily differences

Get a fresh perspective on life, See you on the mat.

Vanity Karma:  by Jayadvaita Swami

Why am I here? What is my life for? What—if anything—does it mean?

Ecclesiastes, “the strangest book in the Bible,” begins with the argument that our life on earth is pointless, that we spend it working hard for “vanity,” for nothing better than vapor—and then die and disappear into oblivion.

In the 1960s the themes of Ecclesiastes profoundly moved a young Jewish American boy, starting him on a quest for meaning that led him to the Bhagavad-gita, India’s preeminent book of wisdom. Today, after following the teachings of the Gita for more than forty-five years, that young boy, now old and wiser, looks deep into Ecclesiastes again.

His thoughts and reflections, along with his modern English rendering of the full text of Ecclesiastes, make Vanity Karma valuable for the seeker, for the scholar, and for anyone serious about “the big questions” in life.

Two Part Series:

Choose Love: 2 hrs. In yogic philosophy, the heart, known as the heart chakra, represents healing, compassion and your emotional core. It's believed an "open" heart means a person is more centered, compassionate and loving. When we think of mending our heart, we instantly associate it with romance, yet there are many forms of love, and in many cases the most important is self-love. Finding love for the self at the deepest level is what allows us to give and receive love for and from others.

The very first step in healing your heart is to recognize your light. When the heart centre is cluttered, it is absolutely impossible to truly feel, let alone see your light. The most transformational way to de-clutter and get rid of the "rubbish," whether that is pain, guilt or any type of suffering, is emotional release. The heart is the source of intuition and truth. When we learn how to live from our hearts, we operate from a very deeply rooted and connected place. In this workshop, you will explore heart openers as a way of cultivating Moksha.

See Deeper: 2hrs.Break free from your bodily imprisonment. The tighter we are, the less able we are to move freely, and the more we are likely to suffer from aches and pains. With strong, mobile and open hips, we can begin to free ourselves from our bodies and create space to move into curiosity. Instead of fitting into the shapes, we allow the shapes to fit into us, which manifests into one becoming the best and most healed version of ourselves.

We hold emotional tension in various areas of the body, however the hips receive special attention as an area associated with emotional burden. Often referred to as the ‘junk drawer’ or ‘attic’ of the body, our hips are considered a site of storage for emotions which we do not wish to confront and so tuck away into the deepest confines of our being. In this workshop, you will adventure into the quiet and refined spaces deep within as you quest through hip openers. You will begin to see deeper with truth and compassion, and use the physical shapes to serve as a gateway to pratyahara.

Yoga For Women!.... and if your brave, the men in your life..
2.5 hour
Yoga is about the union of body and mind through the breath, or yin and yang or masculine and feminine or light and dark. And I like to sprinkle that union with a whole lot of body awareness, oh and humor. This class is designed specifically to explore and learn about the female form, and this information is GREAT for men as well. How does strengthening areas and muscles that weaken through neglect (ie, children, careers, exhaustion) or overuse sound? How about men learning to support and deepen their understanding of their partner? Learn to create muscular balance around a joint to reduce and eventually eliminate pain.... think back, shoulders, knees and hips. All of this will be explored in the company and communion of other women, and their vary brave courageous, supportive partners. I hope to create a safe, nurturing and open environment to heal and grow.

Enjoy a bhakti workshop and demonstration of love through music.

Led by Texas mantra musicians Randall and Kristin Brooks, the Bhakti House Band presents an East-meets-West fusion of percussion-driven instrumentation and rich harmonies that enlighten the soul. Combining Sanskrit mantra and kirtan with inspirational English lyrics, the Bhakti House Band creates a sacred space where listeners can surrender their minds to the rhythmic groove of the heart.

Named one of Origin Magazine’s Inspiring Community Leaders in 2012 and one of its Favorite Couples Working Together to Shift the Planet in 2013, Randall and Kristin passionately believe it is every human’s responsibility to use their talents, abilities, and gifts to serve and uplift humanity. Their non-profit organization, the Peace Love OM Project, reaches out to children of all ages to provide projects that allow them to do just that. Also noteworthy is the captivating title track of their recently released second album, Akasha Blue Sky. The piece is a collaboration of 18 children from various cultures and traditions singing for "Love, Peace, and Harmony". This inspiring song has quickly garnered attention from philanthropists and peace organizations all over the world.

Since the 2011 release of their first award-winning album, Nada Bhakti: The Sound of Devotion, they have gained thousands of loyal fans in more than 52 countries. This worldwide support inspired two new releases in 2014: Akasha Blue Sky, benefiting their non-profit, the Peace Love Om Project; and the first volume of their new mantra sound meditation series, Sounds of the Sun Volume 1: Gayatri Mantra, all available on iTunes and Amazon.

This is based on the course I offer each year at UT HEALTH for the medical students transitioning into residency.  It will cover the basic ideas and principles involved in energetic and spiritual healing paradigms.  We will look at the history of healing from the times of the Greek philosophers, like Hippocrates who said that food is the best medicine and Pythagoras who believed in reincarnation.  We will examine how the scientific paradigm that began in the 17th century changed the practice of medicine by  focusing on the body and removing spirits from the health equation.  We will compare and contrast energetic medicine to Western (allopathic) medicine, and cover some essential concepts of energetic medicine.  Energy medicine is a natural form of healing which cultivates radiant health from within by focusing on cultivating the free flow of energy.  We will have a discussion about what spirituality means, what it means to our health, and how it is being studied in medicine today.  All participants will be invited to experience a brief sample Reiki session at the hands of a master healer.

8 Limbs of Yoga for the Modern Yogi: From Asana to Zen

Many yogis and non-yogis know about asana, and asana is perhaps the most visible and accessible limb of ashtanga (or raja) yoga. Many yoga teachers teach asana almost exclusively. This is not bad or wrong.

And, asana is only one limb of eight. There is a depth and a richness in our yogic tradition that could take lifetimes to discover and unravel. What relevance do Patanjali's 8 Limbs of Yoga as outlined in the sutras have to us as modern day yogis with busy schedules, to do lists, jobs to maintain and families to support in THIS lifetime? And how can we begin to experience some of the gifts of this yogic path and practice beyond asana?
In this full monty workshop, we will touch upon each of the 8 limbs, including a dynamic discussion of the yamas and niyamas as a guideline for modern living and a way to see our world. We will discuss  and practice using the 8 Limbs of Yoga as a vehicle for living a happy and abundant life.
This class contains: discussion, some asana, meditation, inquiry and chanting. It will be fun and funny and challenging, just like life.
This class will be co-lead by YogaOne Studios' lead teacher trainers and mentor teachers: Albina and Roger Rippy, Lee Zacharias and Davina Davidson. It will be assisted by YogaOne's teachers.  YogaOne is Houston's largest yoga studio community and was founded in 2008. For more information go to: www.yogaonehouston.com

Can viewing channeling as a creative process help understand why certain material is adopted and revered while the rest is ignored? Is there potential therapeutic and self-actualizing value in wider adoption of techniques from both channelers and cultural creatives? Can everyone “channel”? Prophet will explore different approaches to evaluating channeling, including historical-factual, psychological, spiritual, and paranormal. The presentation will be enhanced with examples from history and literature, and also Prophet’s own experiences. Finally, she will examine the latest neuroscientific studies about creativity and theta waves, and conduct exercises designed to promote relaxed, creative states.

Stories and myths help us to better understand ourselves and the world around and inside of us. This holds true for the stories and myths that inspired some of the better known poses in our asana repertoire. So, in this class we take a moment to dive deep into the story, the flow and the creation of a new perspective in hopes to heal, transform and open up more deeply to grace.

It is in creation that we find life at its fullest and stories are, after all unending creations that can change everything. Coupled with all the vibration, light, energy and healing we can create on our mats when we practice; the time for plating seeds creating is perfect.

Session Decription:

Mantra means “tool of protection for the mind” and is a powerful way to quiet and clear the hectic clutter and demanding voices in the mind. If you ever learn only one mantra, the Gayatri is the one to know. Come experience how the most sacred mantra in India creates a firm foundation and powerful tool of illumination for all aspiring yogis, advanced and beginner alike. You will learn how to use sacred sound and conscious devotion as a yogic practice to bring more awareness and light to your life; energize the body, mind, and spirit; and relieve the mind of the harmful effects of daily stress.

Yin Yang Yoga: combining connective tissue release to elevate your practice for advanced asanas

In this 2 hour Asana workshop students will experience Yin Yoga and then be lead through an active intermediate to advanced asana practice with techniques ranging from vinyasa, hatha, and pralaya yoga to allow their bodies to go deeper. Suitable for all practitioners and lovers of Yin and Restorative yoga, because the workshop has three modalities, you can take what you’d like and leave the rest behind.

Beginning with a centering and releasing Yin practice, and then following with more rigorous asanas, and then wrapping up with some guided pranayama, accompanied with a healthy side of restorative yoga for a final blissful ending to our practice.

So many types of yoga, and so little time…
Amanda Field, Mariana Acosta, and Monica Townsend are partnering up to share their love of yoga.

This workshop is designed for you to understand how to integrate three types of yoga to enhance and extend your total practice. This 2 hour workshop will begin with Yin Yoga, be followed by Hatha Flow yoga, and will end with Restorative Yoga.

Yin Yoga releases your connective tissue thus making your body more adaptive to asana practice. Additionally, Yin yoga creates the necessary mental headspace for students to go deeper, allowing the meditative aspect of yoga to be greatly experienced and creating even more mental and physical space in the body. Yin also allows you to access that deep mysterious layer of the muscle, the Fascia. Monica Townsend will be guiding this practice, while Mariana Acosta and Amanda Field assist, so you can expect to get a good hands on experience.

Hatha Flow is an asana practice that incorporates a variety of modalities that Amanda enjoys sharing. The purpose of this asana practice is to help you deepen your asana practice and get into the harder to access poses - binds, forearm balances, and inversions, backbends, and bandhas as well. Amanda Field will be leading this practice while Mariana Acosta and Monica Townsend assist, so you can expect to get a good hands on experience.

Restorative yoga will be the icing on your cake as your physical practice comes to a close. Ending the practice with blankets, bolsters, and aromatherapy, and creating a restorative physical environment for you as your body begins to assimilate it's experience. During the restorative sessions Mariana Acosta will guide you while any adjustments need to be made.

Sol Sense Yoga® by Athea Davis is the mapping of modern day spirit medicine.  Sol Sense Yoga uses a 3-step method to connect and guide us to our internal directional guiding system built in within the framework of our neurophysiology and biology that guides us in our stages of relationships, soul development, and life destinations similarly the way maps guide us to our physical destinations.  The method consists of 3 distinct parts integrated into an epilogue stage of life skills in divine presence. The stages are as follows:

  1. Turning the Heartlights On
  2. Distillation Highway
  3. Blissfully Neutral

Epilogue – Traversing Valleys and Mountaintops

My vision through the concept and construct of Sol Sense Yoga is to offer an environment where we can build relationships from a place of authenticity, love, and worth that fosters the evolution of healing and connection using an interdisciplinary approach through yoga, integral spirituality, social neuroscience, and transpersonal psychology and educational psychology, including the Bowen Theory. I desire to share the physical practice and philosophical wisdom of yoga to all that desire to take a moment to slow down and listen without getting stuck in hearing only mode and to open up our perception prisms to view yoga as a conduit to the Divine.  I also desire to use traumatic events in our life as catalysts of spiritual power that lead us to make transformations that elevate our consciousness and awareness and bridge us to a more meaningful, creative, and whole life where our motives are based from a place of courage, love, compassion, and connection.

This is a 2-hour workshop with some lecture (approx. 30 minutes) and movement (90 minute practice).  In addition to using my Sol Sense Yoga® method, the physical practice will also include a full spectrum class with strains of traditional hatha and vinyasa practices to a background of enlivening music with aromatherapy and gentle neck/shoulder massage during savasana.  This class is suitable for all levels.
